Silk: Properties & Sewing Tips | Fabric Guide

Silk is a noble natural fiber obtained from the cocoons of silkworms. It is considered the queen of fabrics and captivates with its luxurious shine, supple texture and exceptional wearing properties. Silk regulates body temperature, is hypoallergenic and is one of the strongest natural fibers. It is used for high-quality clothing, home textiles and even medical applications.

  • Very tear-resistant and elastic – can be stretched up to 20%
  • Hypoallergenic and naturally resistant to dust mites
  • Absorbs up to 30% moisture without feeling damp

Sewing Tips for Silk

Cut with a rotary cutter: Silk is very smooth and slippery. Use a sharp rotary cutter with a fresh blade and pattern weights instead of pins to secure the fabric when cutting. This prevents permanent pin holes and gives you clean cutting edges.

Use Microtex needles: Use Microtex needles (also called sharp point needles) in size 60/8 or 70/10 for your sewing machine. These needles have a particularly fine, sharp point that penetrates the delicate silk fabric without causing damage. Also use extra fine glass head pins.

Use French seams: Silk frays quickly, so French seams are ideal. They completely enclose the cut edges and look clean on both sides of the fabric. Alternatively, you can use a walking foot to ensure both fabric layers move evenly through the machine.

Frequently Asked Questions about Silk

Does silk shrink when washing?
Yes, silk can shrink on first wash, especially when exposed to heat. Always pre-wash your silk fabric in cold water (below 30°C) or have it dry cleaned. Be sure to follow the care instructions on the label to avoid shrinkage.
Can you wash silk in the washing machine?
Some modern silk fabrics are suitable for machine washing – always check the care label. If machine washing is allowed, use a laundry bag, select the delicate cycle with cold water and use a special silk detergent. However, hand washing is always the safest method.
How to remove stains from silk?
Treat stains immediately by gently blotting with a damp cloth – never rub! For grease stains, you can use Sommières clay (dry) to absorb the oil without damaging the fibers. For stubborn stains, professional cleaning is recommended.
